Our formulated research question:
How did fashion evolve as a consequence of the contribution of British women to the war efforts during the First World War?
Why we chose this research question and how it relates to our project
This research question was specifically formulated and selected for it manages to incorporate all of the major aspects of our project; fashion, Britain and the impact women made in the war. These specific things interest us for as a group of girls, with this topic we can really connect with the information that we discover, and sympathise with the women of the war as we are women ourselves. We decided to look at our project this way due to the fact that sometimes it can be hard for us to personally put ourselves in the shoes of a soldier in the war who was fighting in the front line (for example) since this position is so drastically different to our lifestyles in many ways. Also in our group we have a particular interest in fashion and we are striving to understand more about the history of it and why what we wear today is the way it is and this research question allows us to do so.
Sub-Questions
What are the similarities and differences between women’s fashion from the beginning of the war and the end of the war? This sub-question needs to be investigated in order to fully understand our topic, for a key concept of this project is being able to see and know the difference of fashion before and after the war. A major way that this will be done is by comparing and contrasting descriptions of fashion before and after the war as well as looking at images that can be found in books and on the internet.
